LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Torrance mother was indicted Monday by a criminal grand jury in the stabbing deaths of her three daughters, officials from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.

Carol Ann Coronado, 30, pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity Monday to three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Coronado allegedly stabbed her three young daughters to death and tried to kill her mother on May 20. The three girls were ages 3, 2 and 2 months. A former soldier, Coronado was also hospitalized for self-inflicted stab wounds.

The unsealed indictment, which was returned on Sept. 22, includes a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders and a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, in the commission of the crime, officials said.

Coronado is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 17 for a pretrial hearing.
